Don’t Lose Hope

The most phenomenal thing happened yesterday. My friend’s dad had come to visit me at my apartment in Saket   . As he and my friend, Hemani, proceeded to leave – we saw that their driver was not outside. When I asked my guard – where the driver had gone – he replied .. ” Woh Khaana Khana kai liye gaya hai.” And he had taken the car. That was a bit weird – that the driver had gone to eat and had taken the car. And worse yet, he had not informed my uncle that he was going to lunch.   But we did not think much of it.

So we called the Driver on his cell phone.   The driver duly answered – and he said that he would be back in fifteen minutes. So we waited, and waited, and waited.  For about forty minutes. Then we tried the driver’s phone again.

And .. then .. silence. The drivers’ phone was out of reach.   This happened at 2:30 in the afternoon.  We tried the driver’s phone for about three  more hours.  But with no luck.    Totally frustrated we weighed all the options.   Finally, at about 6:00 pm – we decided it best to go to the Delhi police to launch an FIR.  OK, we did not expect much to happen – but protocol, insurance and good sense dictated that we should do so.

We landed at the Delhi Police Station to file  our complaint at about 7:00 pm.  The Inspector was adamant that we had no need to worry – that the driver must be drunk somewhere and that he would be back in the morning.  With lots of resistance,  we still proceeded to file our complaint – since still the driver was not answering his phone.   And by now we were all convinced that HE HAD RUN OFF WITH THE CAR  .. uggh ..

My uncle was from Gaziabhad .. the incident took place in Saket, Delhi.   We did not have much details on the driver since all the information was at his home in Gaziabhad.   He had also just been working with my uncle for only a month and hence we did not have sufficient data on his character.   But given all the horror stories that one hears of car thefts – our minds naturally went  in that direction.

So we persisted and proceeded with our complaint.  All of  us resigned that nothing would come of our complaint.  It did not seem that the officers were about to do much.

But today at 2:00 pm, I get a call that the POLICE have caught the driver – in a taxi to Anand Vihar.  No sign of the car – but the driver has been caught.  In a city with a population of over 30 million, it took the police less than 24 hours to find one person.  Totally amazing.   Astonishing.  Mind Blowing.    If I had not witnessed this myself – I would not also believe it.  But it is true.  SO hats off to the Delhi Police – it is no telling what is possible when they put their minds to it.  Now only if they can find the car!
