Yesterday – I went to see the movie Rann.    Rann means battle – and this is about a battle between the journalistic truth and the desire to make TRPs.   There were several takeaways for me after watching the movie:

  1. DO not blindly believe everything that you hear in the media.  Please use your own mind.  God have given each of us one for a reason.   So please think sincerity, credibility, neutrality and objectivity of what you are listening too or reading.
  2. In the age of digitization, everything can be manipulated through photoshop and good editing.
  3. If news media is focusing on sensational journalism – it is our fault since we are the ones that give the channels the TRP.  The more we watch this type of programming – the more of this type of programming there will be.   We vote everyday with our remote controls.   So please vote accordingly and then don’t complain that there is nothing good on TV.
  4. Competition is what keeps everyone in line and out of line.   Be it the fight between the politicians, the channels etc –  the competition between adversaries is really  what enables us to find out what is the truth.
  5. Technology, technology, technology.  Today – no longer the power of the pen, or the power of the media is with only the big guns.  In the world of the Internet – you too can make your thoughts and voices known.   The impact that you have in this viral world is unprecedented.  But use it wisely.
  6. Media is a business, and has been for some time now, so get used to it.  The companies need profits to survive in a world and where most companies are public.  Again – we as shareholders will punish those that don’t deliver the goods .. ie .. shorting the stock.   But making short terms returns and sacrificing long terms returns is JUST NOT GOOD BUSINESS SENSE – there is no excuse for faking news – the public cannot be fooled for too long.
  7.  Try to find out both sides of the story.  With ever more access to different media platforms – this is no longer difficult.  Have you heard of the FOX news channel – yes it is typical of everything the movie Rann is about – totally slanted and totally biased – but that’s my view.     But there are many other channels that provide a more balanced perspective – so hear them out too.

In the day of opinion journalism and inundation of information,  we the consumers just have to be smarter.
